2016 Altas Vinas Magnum

REVIEWS
95 points, Vinous
Deep lurid ruby. Spicy, intensely perfumed aromas of fresh dark berries, Indian spices, cola, and potpourri. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated yet lively black currant and boysenberry flavors and suggestions of candied violet and star anise. Picks up a smoky nuance on a strikingly long, penetrating finish that features a repeating floral note and smooth tannins.

The 2016 Altas Vinas is a Mourvèdre-dominated blend that includes 24% Grenache and 12% Syrah, all of which saw plenty of stems and 18 months in larger, neutral barrels. Complex notes of lavender, peppery spice, cured meats, and incense all flow to a rich, full-bodied, fruit-loaded red. It's one of the bigger, richer, more overtly powerful wines in the lineup and ideal for drinking over the coming 6-8 years.
This estate hit a home run with these latest 2016s, and the charming, more supple style of the vintage worked perfectly with the more savory, classic style preferred by McPrice Myers. These are unquestionably the finest wines I’ve tasted from him, and readers should snatch up these wines.

Precise but shows personality, offering vibrant dried cherry, dusty mocha and cured meat accents that build richness toward polished tannins.
