2016 Shadow Canyon Magnum
Situated at 1,600’ elevation, a mere 8 miles from the ocean, Shadow Canyon is one of only a few vineyards in the York Mountain AVA. The warm days yield to cool nights allowing for a long growing season and ideal ripening.
Fermented with 65% whole clusters in open top bins. The wine spent 15-20 days on skins with pump-overs during cold soak and punch downs during fermentation. Aged 20 months in 265 and 228-liter French barriques, 75% new.

The deep purple-colored 2016 Shadow Canyon is a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache from the York Mountain AVA on the western edge of Paso Robles. This is a cooler, wetter region compared to Paso Robles and the wines from here always have a cool climate vibe. Deep purple-colored, with lots of darker, meaty fruits, game, damp forest floor, and peppery aromas and flavors, this full-bodied Syrah is one of the more dense, chewy wines in the lineup. Give it a year or two, and it should drink nicely through 2026.
This estate hit a home run with these latest 2016s, and the charming, more supple style of the vintage worked perfectly with the more savory, classic style preferred by McPrice Myers. These are unquestionably the finest wines I’ve tasted from him, and readers should snatch up these wines.

Brilliant purple. Cherry cola, blackberry, candied licorice, lavender and a touch of incense on the deeply perfumed nose. Stains the palate with glossy black and blue fruit liqueur flavors that are energized by peppery spice and floral qualities. Appealingly sweet and concentrated, finishing with impressive power and breadth and slowly building, velvety tannins.
