26 acres of the 620-acre Laetitia Vineyard are planted to Syrah in one of the coolest growing regions in the state; a mere 4 miles from the ocean. Calcareous soils and a south-facing slope combine to produce grapes that yield supple and concentrated wines.

VINIFICATION

60% whole cluster fermented in small, open top bins, and spent 15-20 days on skins with a combination of pump-overs and punch downs during fermentation. Aged 18 months in 265 and 228-liter barriques, 45% new oak.

TASTING NOTES

Blackberry, mulberry, and fennel on the nose, with smoked paprika, mint, cured meats, clove, wood briquettes, capers, and creosote on the palate.  The finish is long and savory, bringing applewood smoked bacon to mind.  Pair with Spaghetti alla puttanesca.

REVIEWS

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck

Another best to date, the 2016 Les Galets (100% Syrah) boasts a huge, gamy, Côte Rôtie-like perfume of bacon fat, spring flowers, cracked peppercorns, and smoked meats. Fermented with 45% whole clusters and aged in 60% new French oak, this full-bodied, concentrated, meaty Syrah has stunning purity of fruit, good acidity, and building tannins. The more sexy, forward style of the 2016 vintage worked wonders with McPrice’s more firm, savory style and this is an undeniably great vintage for this estate.

This estate hit a home run with these latest 2016s, and the charming, more supple style of the vintage worked perfectly with the more savory, classic style preferred by McPrice Myers. These are unquestionably the finest wines I’ve tasted from him, and readers should snatch up these wines.

94 points, Josh Raynolds

Bright violet. Spicy, intensely perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, olive paste and candied violet. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering penetrating black currant, blueberry and spicecake flavors complemented by suggestions of cola and cracked pepper. Picks up a smoky nuance on the impressively long, incisive finish, which features a lingering floral note, repeating spiciness and slow-building tannins.
